With the inauguration of the Villupuram-Tiruchirapalli electrified broad gauge section, work is on in full swing on the 160-km stretch between Tiruchirapalli and Madurai.
All works between Tiruchirapalli and Dindigul and wiring up to Samayanallur station, 14 km from Madurai, is over. By June this year, wiring up to Madurai will be completed.
The Railways plans to set up three sub-stations between Tiruchirapalli and Madurai, one each at Vyampatti, Vellode and Kudal Nagar.
The work will be completed by July and, in all probability, electrification work up to Madurai by August this year.
According to an official of the Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE), electrification between Villupuram and Tiruchirapalli (178 km), a part of Villupuram-Tiruchirapalli-Madurai-Nagercoil/ Tuticorin project, has been completed and trial run of two pairs of passenger services with electric locomotives between Tiruchi and Chennai Egmore has begun.
