Anna University students develop portal with search engine in Tamil

Students and researchers of Anna University, Chennai have developed a Tamil portal www.searchko.in which encompasses a dedicated search engine in Tamil.

Dr L. Sobha, one of the research members in the Anna University-K.B. Chandrasekar Research Centre (AU-KBC), said that searchko website uses information retrieval (IR) technology for searching the Tamil content in the web. This website uses many types of natural language processing technology for getting the most relevant output.
“Internet has about 10 million documents in Tamil and bringing it under one umbrella using IR technology is the aim of searchko. The unique features of the website are multiple font support, enhancing the query with the help of a morph analyser, works with a phonetic visual keyboard and spell checker,” the researcher said.
Pointing out that the etymology of searchko was king of search as “ko” in Tamil means king, Dr Sobha said that the website has dictionary with Tamil to English and vice-versa with 1.5 lakh root words.
About the future services in the website, Dr Sobha said that the website would have facilities like video conferencing, matrimonial search, real estate search, etc.
The research team has already included live cricket updates in Tamil to help persons who know only Tamil
