Opportunities multiply in fabrication sector

With players in power industry Larsen and Toubro and Thermax evincing interest in outsourcing jobs to vendors based in Tiruchi, opportunities in the fabrication sector have multiplied.

But, whether or not the few hundreds of fabrication units in Tiruchi region have the capacity to absorb more work loads is entirely a different question. As for the vendors in the region, they already have their hands full with BHEL's orders what with the power major finding itself powered along the trajectory of stupendous growth. Industry organisations see this as the right opportunity to foster entrepreneurship in fabrication and engineering sector. The BHEL Small Industries' Association is already into the task of expanding output through mechanisation initiatives and creating new fabrication clusters in the districts of Thanjavur and Dindigul.According to president of Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries S. Sridhar, the time is ideal to explore possibilities for creating new clusters in Pudukottai district. In the land available with the SIPCOT at Thirukokarnam, an exclusive industrial estate for fabrication can be created, he suggested. For the growth to happen as desired by the industry organisations, there will still be problems on two fronts. Due to the power crisis, many industries are unable to utilise their entire production capacity. Yet, a good number of industries have begun to set an example by making productive use of generators, and implementing other productivity enhancement strategies.

Invariably, all the industries are finding it extremely difficult to grapple with the problem of manpower shortage. The BHELSIA, for instance, has been bringing in people from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to offset the shortage. In fact, industries eagerly employ the workforce from the northern states since they do not go on leave so often as their local counterparts.

But, in the long run, both industry organisations favour putting in place a mechanism for large-scale generation of work force locally since the workforce after a certain duration of experience prefer to migrate to middle-east and south-east asian countries.

The industry organisations, it is learnt, are desirous of having tie-ups with Industrial Training Institutes and Polytechnics.
